About SGEM
SGEM (Stockholm Genetically Engineered Machines) is a non-profit association founded by alumni in 2015. Our mission is to support students in Stockholm participating in the iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) Competition. We provide the structure, continuity, and network that enables each new team to build on the experience of the previous one. As the organisation grows, we aim to build stronger links between emerging talent and the life science sector across Stockholm and Sweden.
iGEM Competition
The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) Competition is the world's largest synthetic biology competition. Each year, student teams from around the world design and build innovative biological solutions to solve real-world problems. Their projects integrate biology, engineering, and computational methods to address challenges in health, sustainability, food systems, and the environment. The teams then present their work at the Grand Jamboree (in Paris), where they showcase their projects and compete with teams globally.
Team Stockholm
Each year, SGEM recruits students from universities across Stockholm to form the iGEM Stockholm team. Participating in the team offers a unique opportunity to work on a fully student-driven project while gaining hands-on experience in research, collaboration, and innovation.
